Josef Čapek,
*23. 3. 1887, †duben 1945, český malíř, grafik, ilustrátor,
scénograf, spisovatel a výtvarný kritik, bratr Karla Čapka.
Spoluzakladatel Skupiny výtvarných umělců, redaktor Uměleckého
měsíčníku, poté člen Spolku výtvarných umělců Mánes,
redaktor Volných směrů, jeden z iniciátorů skupiny Tvrdošíjných.
V letech 1921–39 redaktor Lidových novin. Za protifašistickou
činnost zatčen v září 1939 a vězněn v německých
koncentračních táborech.
V malířské tvorbě vyšel z
francouzské malby doby pocézannovské, záhy podlehl vlně
kubismu (Dva výrostci), v obrazech se sociální a městskou
tematikou nalezl osobitou malířskou zkratku se silným emocionálním
nábojem (Parta, Dva u zdi), věnoval se též krajině a dětským
motivům. Na konci 30. let vyvrcholila dramatická účinnost díla
v cyklech symbolizujících nadcházející válku (Oheň,
Touha) a v tvorbě politické karikatury pro noviny (Modern
times, Diktátorské boty). Působil průbojně v oboru knižního
výtvarnictví svými obálkami a ilustracemi. Psal pohádky pro
děti (Povídání o pejskovi a kočičce), prózu (Stín
kapradiny) a společně s bratrem Karlem Čapkem divadelní hry
(Ze života hmyzu). Jako jevištní výtvarník spolupracoval s
Národním divadlem v Praze, Státním divadlem v Brně a s
Divadlem na Vinohradech. Věnoval se výtvarné kritice a teorii
(Nejskromnější umění, Umění přírodních národů).
Autor filozoficky laděných próz Kulhavý poutník a Psáno do
mraků.

Josef
Capek (1887-1945), a Czech painter, graphic artist,
illustrator, scenic designer, writer and art critic. Brother of
Karel Capek.
Capek was a founding member of many artist associations,
including Manes, and an
editor of the art journal "Volne smery" and of the daily
newspaper "Lidove noviny" in the years 1921-39.
Following the German occupation in 1939, Capek was imprisoned
for his anti-Fascist activities and sent to a Germant
concentration camp.
In his art work Capek drew from
the post-Cezanne French artists and later won a
considerable reputation as a painter of the Cubist school (Two
Urchins). Capek's typical emotionaly charged expressions can be
found in his works on social and city themes (The Gang, Two by
the Wall).
At end of the
30s, his well-known attitude against the
rise of dictatorship and terrible consequences of war
symbolised the dramatic effect in his paintings (The Fire,
The Longing), and in the newspaper caricatures (Modern Times,
Dictator's Shoes). Capek is the author of one of the most
acclaimed of children stories about a fellowship of a cat and
dog ("Povidani o pejskovi a kocicce"), short
novels, and he wrote theatre plays together with Karel Capek.
The Insect Play took the world by storm and was performed to
great acclaim in London and New York. As a scenic designer Capek
worked in the National Theatre in Prague, State Theatre in Brno
and other important scenes. |
